Masterclass in Filmmaking by Prof. Jonathan Whittaker from New York Film Academy at St. Xavier’s College Kolkata organized by Globe Ed

More than 175 students along with faculty members of St. Xavier’s College Kolkata were completely immersed in the engaging masterclass of Jonathan Whittaker of New York Film Academy on Friday evening organized by Globe Ed, New York Film Academy and St. Xavier’s College Kolkata. The director as an effective communicator must know the language of the crew, the caste as well as the audience. As Jonathan explained the different camera angles and screentime through which a film director tells the story, we were fascinated! Thank you Jonathan (professor at NYFA), Lizzie (associate director of strategic initiatives at NYFA) and Father Dejus (head of media department at St. Xavier’s College) for this tremendous educational opportunity!

Our Student Success Stories: Ritika Agarwal, the Mind behind Kolkata’s 1920 Bakery

The bread really was the hero of quarantine kitchens; be it the sourdough starters or focaccia kits, breads did ‘rise’ to every occasion. The newly opened 1920 Bakery is actually a step ahead of your neighbourhood bakeries in terms of curation. “No one in the city was making a chocolate babka, for instance. Fresh hand-made options were just not there; we wanted to elevate the way we use breads, in terms of flavours or ingredients. And we thought let’s introduce something different, we essentially wanted to bring something new to people’s tables,” Ritika Agarwal, the mind behind the bakery, tells us. The expert-run kitchen started its run during the lockdown and quickly discovered it had a lot of ground to […]

MBA after 10+ years of work experience – to do or not to do?

It is a dilemma for those who have crossed the age of 30 and have 10 or more years of work experience. The usual experience required for an MBA is 3-5 years. You can stretch this to 7-8 years. But if you have 10 or more years, many business schools will question your ‘late waking up’. If you have good reason for such delay, it would be imperative for you to explain it in the application. What the business schools will also consider is your career trajectory. If you have taken more time to achieve what others have in fewer years, it will go against you. No school will want students who might slow down the class. Besides, universities would […]

Coffee & Conversation 2020: Making a Career Abroad

Educative, Elucidative, Exclusive is how the students who attended this year’s Coffee & Conversation, described the event. Our guest speakers Subhojit Mukherjee and Prithviraj Ray immediately connected with everyone which led to a very exciting and interactive discussion. Engaging in intelligent and pertinent questions, the students participated enthusiastically, making the session, as rightly put by Aditya, insightful. Subhojit began the conversation by comparing the careers of four of his friends who are employed in different countries of the EU. What they all had in common were four things: academic excellence, proactivity, visibility and networking. He stressed on the importance of maintaining good grades as they make you immediately stand out. However, good grades are not enough. Even if you are […]

When Hitesh Tekchandani aka the Salsawala came to our office in 2009, no one could think that this will be the start of such a success story. It was not easy convincing his family, as after a degree in BCom he was expected to build a career in business. With his determination he broke all conformity and decided to indulge in his passion by pursuing a degree in dance. One has to be very resilient!

Studying abroad is a change for life. The one common thing all parents experience is how independent their children have become. Living and competing amongst a community of self-motivated students from different parts of the world teaches our young and protected children to stand up and stand out. Thank you Mrs. Sanyal for your thoughts!

Why every student should consider studying abroad

When we think of studying abroad, what comes to our minds first is – oh that’s going to be really expensive, and there are enough good institutions at less than half the cost in India, why should I go abroad? Agreed, it’s expensive, but have you considered if it is worth investing in? With ever increasing competition in the Indian education market, even 90%+ marks don’t get you a place in the top institutions which have limited seats. Many new private institutions have sprung up in India but they too charge you a hefty fee. If by spending a little more, you can study abroad and gain additional benefits of learning to communicate with different cultures, cultivate a culture of […]

Coffee & Conversation 2019: Student Life Abroad

“Network, network, network!” was Anneysa Ghosh’s advice to students at our this year’s Coffee and Conversation round. During her years at the University of York she embraced every chance to connect with people, volunteering to help them out. This way she gained precious work experience and boost her CV. “Think about what kind of impression it gives if you have worked for a mayor of a big foreign city”, she advised and pointed out that infact in many cases, she even got paid back for her free work later, through “real” job offers and a network which helped her to establish herself as a successful business woman. Dr. Hans-Martin Kunz, former lecturer of Social Anthropology, told us about the traps […]
